Broom Huggers

Attention moms-to-be April 9, 2007

Filed under: Food & nutrition, Health hazards, Pregnancy — Kathy @ 10:26 pm

A recent study from the University of Rochester suggests that the hormones cows are fed is very much present in the beef we eat. In fact, the study shows that men whose mothers ate beef every day during pregnancy averaged a sperm count 24.3% lower than average. It also notes a suspected connection to polycystic ovarian syndrome, early puberty, and altered growth rates in daughters.

So, the moral of the story… pregnant women and moms of young boys too (the article doesn’t mention them, but surely they’re at risk too, right?), buy some stock in Chick-Fil-A. No, seriously though, a diet with smaller quantities of beef also lowers the implications of cholesterol, and nutritionists have long raved the benefits of white meat. Replacing all your beef with chicken may not be the best solution, but ground turkey and buffalo are available in most supermarkets, and supplementing your weekly meals with more white meats, seafood, and other departures from beef may have greater long-term health benefits than we previously knew.

Cleaning our your closets? April 6, 2007

Try Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe! It’s an effort to keep shoes out of landfills by recycling them and putting them to good use in basketball courts, playground surfacing, tennis courts… They use the rubber from the soles, the foam from the insulation and padding and the cloth from the shoe uppers to pave the way for sports and outdoor play.

So of course, when you’re cleaning out your closets, donate gently used shoes to a charity you find worthwhile. But for those athletic shoes that have seen better days (you know the ones I’m talking about), go to Nike’s site to find a drop-off location near you. They have them in most metro areas.

Thursday’s tip: Easy microwave cleaning April 5, 2007

Filed under: Cleaning tips, Kitchen — Kathy @ 5:05 pm

Personally, I hate cleaning my microwave. I usually have my husband do it. You see, I’m awfully short. And my microwave is one of those under-the-counter ones – I love it, but I absolutely can’t reach to clean the whole inside. But now. I. have. a. method. In three easy steps too – couldn’t be easier!

  1. Cut a lemon in half. Reserve half of it for some other use. Place other half of it in a microwave-safe bowl, cut side up. Cover with water.
  2. Place the bowl in the microwave, and zap it on high for 5 minutes.
  3. Remove bowl (careful! It’s hot!) and discard contents. Use a paper towel or cleaning rag to wipe down the inside of the microwave.

Now wasn’t that easy?

Safer plastics – baby bottles and sippy cups April 3, 2007

Filed under: Health hazards, Shopping — Kathy @ 7:23 pm

Just when you think it’s safe to come out of your bubble-like, self-sustaining bunker, someone dishes on Sippy cups! Who knew my kids’ beloved sippies could be leeching harmful phthalates and carcinogens into their vulnerable little bodies! I’ve switched their teethers to phthalate free, and I try to stock up on phthalate free toys (and battery-free too, but that’s another post all together). Thanks to Umbra over at Grist for tacking the issue of sippy cups and baby bottles. Umbra linked me over to the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, which had this helpful PDF about all sorts of plastics, and even naming names for good and bad sippy cups and bottles.  It just so happens that both my kids used polycarbonate bottles – those were their favorites! My poor, polycarbonate-loving kids…

Take a look at that PDF – it’ll help you evaluate the plastics you buy and the way you use them.

Plant love April 2, 2007

Check this out! It’s biodegradable, earthy-friendly, plant based lipstick. The packaging is plant-based and biodegradable too. And what’s best? Plant the box it came in, and it’ll sprout flowers! Plant Love lipstick by CARGO is available exclusively at Sephora. Reviewers say the lipstick feels great on, so I can’t wait to buy mine. And try it. And plant it!

Now that’s clever.

Dirt exposure ‘boosts happiness’, UK scientists say April 2, 2007

Filed under: Cleaning tips, News — Kathy @ 1:31 pm

A BBC report this morning tells us what us parents of toddlers have always known – some time in the sandbox put smiles on faces. Well, actually the study is a little more in depth and scientific than that… Lung cancer patients experienced improvements in their quality of life and mice produced more of the ‘happy’ brain chemical serotonin after exposure to soil.

Lack of serotonin is linked to depression in people, and it seems that we can boost our serotonin levels through exposure to dirt. So maybe we should all have adult-sized sandboxes in the backyard… That could be the new spa experience! Well, maybe taking up gardening would be a more sensible solution…

Doctors have long known that homes that are vacuumed too frequently tend to bring on greater problems with allergies, which seems to indicate that we need some exposure to dirt. Also, doctors recommend only using anti-bacterial soaps when you’re fighting illness, or to significantly limit the use of anti-bacterial soaps, as they also kill good bacteria that keeps you healthy. But, try finding non-anti-bacterial soaps at your grocery store.

So it seems there is such a thing as ‘too clean.’ The moral of the story, go ahead – dig your fingers into the mud. Let it squish through your fingers. And then eat some mudpies. Okay, maybe not.

Why bother with organic cotton? April 2, 2007

Filed under: Organics — Kathy @ 12:28 pm

Cotton accounts for less than 3% of farmed land globally but consumes about a quarter of the pesticides. Isn’t that mind-boggling? That statistic won’t change until we let cotton farmers know, through our purchasing habits, that we object. Think about it.
